R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation Awards $16 Million to Vet School
North Carolina State University has announced a $16 million gift from the R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation to its College of Veterinary Medicine.
The gift includes $8 million for scholarships, more than doubling the college's endowment for scholarships; $3 million for research, doubling the internal funding currently available for research; and $5 million to endow professorships. The foundation also has pledged to match, on a one-to-one basis, additional donations and funds from the state.
Established in 1996 by Randall B. Terry, Jr., co-publisher of High Point Enterprise, the foundation has contributed more than $47 million to NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine, including $20 million following Terry's death in 2004 to help build the Randall B. Terry Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center. Terry became involved with the college in 1998 when one of his nine beloved golden retrievers, Nike, fell ill. The superb care the dog received prompted Terry to join, and later serve as president of, the North Carolina Veterinary Medicine Foundation.
"The R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation has contributed more than any other donor to building NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine into a world-class and world-leading institution," said Paul Lunn, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. "This new commitment will support our students, fund research to ensure that this college is discovery driven, and enable us to recruit and retain world-class innovators to lead our programs."
