Recent gifts, commitments toward fire relief aid top $200 million
As disaster relief efforts for the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County continue, more than $200 million in new funding have been announced, including proceeds from the FireAid benefit concert, a fundraiser during the Grammys, and the launch of a private-sector initiative to assist with recovery.
Proceeds raised from the FireAid benefit concert at Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum are expected to exceed $100 million, including private gifts from the Azoff family, the rock bands the Eagles and U2, and Andrew Hauptman and Ellen Bronfman Hauptman, as well as proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and donations. Steve and Connie Ballmer, owners of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, matched pledges made during the broadcast and video on demand viewing of the concert, and operating costs were offset by the Clippers. Led by the Annenberg Foundation, the FireAid Grants Advisory Committee aims to identify key areas of need for recovery. In addition, the Los Angeles Times reports that the Grammys and affiliated events have raised at least $24 million toward fire relief, including $9 million on Grammy night and $15 million from MusiCares events.
In addition, Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter, the Walter Family Foundation, and the Dodgers Foundation have committed an initial $100 million to help launch LA Rises, a private-sector initiative to support wildfire recovery in Los Angeles.
“This is a time for bold action,” said Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson in a statement. “We’re bringing together the best resources and biggest hearts across California to ensure that every Angeleno—no matter their race, socioeconomic status, or neighborhood—has a chance to rebuild and thrive. This isn’t just about recovery; it’s about restoring communities, while also making them more resilient and better than before.”
