Robin Hood Distributes 100 Percent of Sandy Relief Funds
The New York City-based Robin Hood Foundation has announced that it has finished distributing the $70.5 million in funds it raised to help victims of Superstorm Sandy.
All told, the Robin Hood Relief Committee awarded 494 Sandy-related grants to 391 organizations. More than half the funds (54 percent) went to organizations in New York, the bulk of which were headquartered in New York City (38 percent), while groups on Long Island and elsewhere in New York State received 16 percent. Organizations in New Jersey received 44 percent of the funding, while Connecticut groups received 2 percent. Two-thirds of all funding was awarded in support of programs working to return families to safe, stable housing.
Donations were collected from more than 260,000 individuals in ninety countries during the foundation's 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief. Held at Madison Square Garden, the concert is believed to have been the most successful disaster relief concert in history.
"Thanks to our generous donors, tens of thousands of families are receiving the life-saving services they need to get their lives back on track," said Robin Hood Foundation executive director David Saltzman. "On behalf of all of us at Robin Hood, I'd like to thank the hundreds of thousands of individuals who gave so generously to help their neighbors in need, and in the process, made our community a better place."
