Saskatchewan Art Gallery Receives $19.1 Million From Anonymous Donor
The MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, has announced an endowment gift of C$25 million ($19.1 million) from an anonymous donor and a six-figure gift from Lyn Goldman.
The largest gift in the MacKenzie's seventy-year history will fund an endowment at the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation that is expected to provide, on average, 25 percent of the gallery's current annual operating budget. Part of an effort to transform the MacKenzie ahead of its seventieth anniversary, the gift will help address the museum's core needs and ensure future growth opportunities.
The gift from Goldman — made in memory of her brother, the late artist Tony Thorn — will be split between the gallery's acquisitions fund and ongoing programming and organizational needs, with the goal of strengthening the museum's capacity to develop and present creative exhibitions and programs and better engage twenty-first-century audiences.
"This visionary anonymous donation comes at a pivotal moment for the gallery, as we expand our range of exhibitions and public programs and improve our onsite facilities," said Anthony Kiendl, the museum's executive director and CEO. "In particular, these gifts strengthen our capacity to be a creative hub and meeting place, fostering meaningful experiences of the world through art. I extend our sincerest appreciation to the anonymous donor — the strength of their vision will make a lasting impact on our gallery and communities. At the same time, Ms. Goldman's gift is insightful, contributing to immediate needs in a strategic and vital way."
