The New York City-based Scratch Foundation, which hosts a free coding platform for children, has announced it has received grants totaling $21 million.
The latest funding includes contributions from Endless, Google, Siegel Family Endowment, and the LEGO and Gordon and Betty Moore foundations in support of the Scratch’s 100 Million More Campaign, through which the foundation aims to expand to more than 200 million users by 2027—its 20th anniversary. Funded by the campaign, Scratch, which was developed at the MIT Media Lab, will work to develop creative AI tools, re-imagine social media with a focus on children’s safety and well-being, and ensure that programming remains free for all children.
“In our rapidly changing world, continuing to center creative learning is critical if we want to prepare children for the challenges of tomorrow,” said Scratch Foundation president and CEO Margaret Honey. “We are grateful for the continued generosity of our funders who make it possible for Scratch to remain free to every child. This funding powers the limitless imaginations of young people around the world who learn, create, and grow with Scratch.”
