The Earthshot Prize has announced the winners of the second annual global competition to discover and help scale solutions that put the world firmly on a trajectory toward a stable climate by 2030.

The program was established by the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales (Prince William and Princess Catherine of the United Kingdom) to find and develop solutions to challenges facing our planet. Selected from more than 1,000 applicants, 15 finalists from 10 countries will receive tailored support to help scale their solutions, and five winners will receive £1 million ($1.22 million).

The winner in the category of “clean our air” is Mukuru Clean Stoves, a startup that provides cleaner-burning stoves to women in Kenya to reduce unhealthy indoor pollution and provide a safer way to cook. In the categories of “protect and restore nature” and “revive our oceans” the winners are Kheyti in India, which helps local smallholder farmers reduce costs, increase yields, and protect livelihoods in a country on the frontlines of climate change, and the Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, a women-led program that combines 60,000 years of indigenous knowledge with digital technologies to protect land and sea. The recipient in the category of “build a waste-free world” is Notpla in the United Kingdom, a circular solution working to create packaging from seaweed as an alternative to plastic, and the winner in the category of “fix our climate” is 44.01 in Oman, which has developed an innovative technique to turn carbon dioxide into rock and permanently store it underground.

“I believe that the Earthshot solutions you have seen this evening prove we can overcome our planet’s greatest challenges. And by supporting and scaling them we can change our future,” said William, Prince of Wales, during the awards ceremony. “Alongside tonight’s winners and finalists, and those to be discovered over the years to come, it’s my hope the Earthshot legacy will continue to grow, helping our communities and our planet to thrive.”
