Singapore’s Temasek, partners commit $200 million for Asian alliance
Temasek Trust, the charitable arm of the Singapore state holdings company, Temasek, has announced the launch of a $200 million global collaboration to fund philanthropic efforts across the Asia-Pacific region.
Funding for the Philanthropy Asia Alliance includes a $100 million commitment from Temasek Trust, in addition to support from the Bill & Melinda Gates, Li Ka Shing, and Tanoto foundations; Dalio Philanthropies; and Sinar Mas, an Indonesian conglomerate. The alliance aims to take systematic and collaborative approaches to philanthropy and social-sector investment across the region. The announcement was made as part of the second annual Philanthropy Asia Summit, held in Singapore in September, which focused on climate action and sustainable communities, inclusive education, and resilient health care.
Projects featured at the summit included the Regional Energy Management Initiative, led by Clime Capital Management, to bring energy management and emissions reduction technologies to Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines and the Genomics for Kids program, led by the Temasek Foundation in collaboration with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to bring access to genomic sequencing and diagnosis to underserved patients throughout Southeast Asia. In addition, the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity—better known as the Education Commission, an initiative focused on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Goal 4—announced the expansion of its programming to the Philippines.
“The Philanthropy Asia Alliance signals changes we are seeing in the philanthropy ecosystem in Asia,” said Temasek Trust chair Ho Ching. “The readiness to collaborate, bias for action, and new funding models mean our pooled resources will be flexible and nimble as we develop solutions that can scale good in Asia.”
