Stanford University Receives $151 Million Gift From Real Estate Mogul

Stanford University has announced a $151 million gift from alumnus and longtime donor John Arrillaga.

The largest gift from a living donor in Stanford history will be used over time to support a range of projects. It is the second nine-figure gift to Stanford from Arrillaga, who in 2006 gave the university $100 million for student scholarships and other purposes.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Arrillaga, a real estate mogul who attended Stanford on a basketball scholarship in the mid-1950s, has been giving back to his alma mater since he graduated in 1960. Indeed, the Arrillaga family name graces many buildings on campus, including the Arrillaga Family Sports Center, the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation, the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center, and the Arrillaga Family Dining Commons. Arrillaga's daughter, Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen, is a graduate of several Stanford programs, serves as a lecturer in philanthropy at the Graduate School of Business, and founded the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society.

"John is a true friend to Stanford, combining extraordinary generosity with unwavering service," said Stanford president John Hennessy. "He brings his professional expertise to each project, and our entire community has benefited from his vision, attention to detail, and passion for Stanford University."
