Susan G. Komen awards $21.7 million for breast cancer research

Susan G. Komen has announced 48 grants totaling $21.7 million in support of breast cancer research.

Grants were awarded to 26 academic medical institutions in the United States for projects focused on improving outcomes for breast cancer patients, particularly for people with the most aggressive breast cancers, or who have experienced a recurrence or metastasis. The majority of grants (79 percent) will support research focused on the most aggressive breast cancers, metastasis, and recurrence; 33 percent will support clinical trials, and 20 percent will support research focused on eliminating breast cancer disparities. With its most recent investment, Komen has committed in excess of $115 million to more than 150 active research projects.

“We still have much to learn about aggressive breast cancers and breast cancers that recur and metastasize,” said Jennifer Pietenpol, Susan G. Komen’s chief scientific officer. “This critical research investment from Susan G. Komen will help us unravel the biology of breast cancers to better understand how to prevent breast cancer recurrence and metastasis, and develop more treatment options, including new treatments for people living with metastatic breast cancer.”
