Texas A&M San Antonio receives $2.1 million for Latinx scholarships
Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) has announced a $2.1 million gift from the Hector and Gloria López Foundation in support of a scholarship program focused on first-generation Latinx college students.
Each year, the program will assist 15 A&M-SA students, covering tuition and fees after other financial support is applied, and will include wraparound services such as mentoring, tutoring, paid internships, and leadership development. López Scholars will be selected at random by the Texas A&M-San Antonio Foundation and will require no application, minimum GPA, or SAT/ACT scores.
“This will be a life-changing investment for the students who are selected as López Scholars,” said Jesse Pisors, A&M-SA vice president for university relations and advancement.
“It’s so important that young Latinos see themselves at institutions of higher education and find a network of support that gets them across the stage with a degree that will boost their economic opportunities,” said López Foundation president and CEO Sergio Rodríguez, a nephew of Hector and Gloria López. The couple, who had no children, left their fortune to the foundation in 2021 following Gloria López’s death—her husband predeceased her in 2014. “We are committed to colleges and universities with high numbers of Latino students and faculty, with proven success in building networks that help students succeed while they are in school and after they graduate.”
