TikTok Pledges $375 Million for COVID-19 Relief Efforts

TikTok, the popular Chinese short-form video platform, has announced commitments totaling $375 million in support of global COVID-19 relief efforts.

The commitment includes $250 million in support of frontline medical workers, educators, and local communities impacted by the global health crisis; $25 million in ad space for trusted organizations with critical public health information to deliver; and $100 million in ad credits for businesses looking to rebuild.

The cash component of the commitment includes $150 million for the TikTok Health Heroes Relief Fund; grants already awarded by the fund include $15 million to the CDC Foundation in support of surge staffing and a previously announced gift of $10 million to the World Health Organization's COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. In addition, a $40 million Community Relief Fund will support local nonprofits serving TikTok's diverse user communities, including musicians, artists, nurses, educators, and families. The company will match up to $10 million in donations to the fund from the TikTok community, while a Creative Learning Fund will award $50 million in grants to educators, professional experts, and nonprofits with skill and expertise in disseminating educational information and course materials in an accessible, distance-learning format.

With the goal of facilitating public health education efforts, the company also will provide prominent in-feed ad space worth $25 million to NGOs, trusted health sources, and local authorities, enabling them to share important virus-related messages with millions of people, while the $100 million in ads for businesses will be targeted to small and midsize companies as they are able to restart operations.

"Looking ahead, TikTok will be actively seeking more ways to contribute, including identifying the most effective ways to allocate these remaining funds to support ongoing relief needs," the company said in a press release. "We understand that these are challenging times for everyone. Alongside businesses, governments, NGOs, and ordinary people across the globe stepping up in this critical moment, we are committed to offering the very best that we can to help out humanity."
