Top 10 charitable gifts in 2022 totaled nearly $9.3 billion
The top 10 charitable gifts announced by individuals or their foundations in 2022 totaled nearly $9.3 billion, with a $5 billion gift from Bill Gates topping the list, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reports.
The gift from Gates to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, made in addition to paying off a $15 billion commitment to the foundation announced in 2021, will support its work in global health, development, policy and advocacy, and U.S. education. The second-largest gift on the list was $1.1 billion from Giving Pledgers Ann and John Doerr through their Benificus Foundation to Stanford University to launch the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, an effort to tackle urgent climate and sustainability challenges. The third largest was a gift of $710.5 million from Jackie and Mike Bezos, the parents of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, in support of research labs and a research facility at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Additional gifts include stock valued at nearly $474.3 million from Warren Buffett to the Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation, which supports women’s reproductive health and provides college scholarships for students in Nebraska, and a $440 million bequest from the late Ruth DeYoung Kohler II to launch the Ruth Foundation for the Arts, which is devoted to supporting visual and performing arts groups across the country.
Rounding out the list of gifts includes $436 million to Habitat for Humanity International, $281 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and $275 million to Planned Parenthood Federation of America from MacKenzie Scott; $425 million from former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and his wife, Connie, through their Ballmer Group to the University of Oregon to establish the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health; and $150 million from Denny Sanford to University of California at San Diego to establish the Sanford Stem Cell Institute.
