Topeka school receives $5 million from late alumnus

The Topeka Public Schools Foundation has announced a $5 million gift from the estate of alumnus Susan Guffey for Highland Park High School, the Topeka Capital-Journal reports.

The largest gift in the foundation’s history will be used to bolster students and student programs, rather than provide support for staff or capital projects. Guffey, who died in 2022, had donated to the school before, including a gift of approximately $200,000, but none as large as the bequest.

“We’ll see students who are better equipped to navigate the world ahead of them,” former Highland Park High School principal Dale Cushinberry told the Journal. “They’re going to be afforded programs and opportunities that will fill their toolboxes with the necessary skills and knowledge.”
