Trustee Boosts Cleveland Museum of Art Challenge Gift to $19 Million
The Cleveland Museum of Art has announced that trustee Scott Mueller, who made an anonymous $10 million challenge gift to the museum last September, has increased the amount of the gift to $19 million.
The original $10 million challenge in support of CMA's $320 million capital campaign was announced as a two-to-one matching gift. Mueller, vice chair of the museum's board and CEO of Dealer Tire, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he increased the size of the gift by $9 million, changed the terms of the challenge to a one-to-one match, and went public to encourage others to step up. With more than half of the requisite match raised in the last quarter of 2014 and a total of $297.1 million raised as of this week, the museum expects to meet its campaign goals by the end of the year.
In addition to the challenge gift, Mueller previously had given $1 million to the museum in support of acquisitions and gave another $2 million more recently — $1 million for the acquisition of contemporary works of art and $1 million for exhibitions and publications — bringing his total support of CMA to more than $23 million since 2009.
"I have supported the Cleveland Museum of Art for a number of years in recognition of its renowned collection," said Mueller. "But these gifts are also intended to incentivize the institution in its pursuit of outstanding contemporary art acquisitions and research as well as the presentation of work by new and emerging artists. Moreover, I have no doubt that under [Cleveland Museum of Art director William M. Griswold’s] visionary leadership, our newly expanded museum will enter its next century with every tool necessary to deliver unmatched experiences to Cleveland audiences and beyond."
