UCSF Receives $18 Million to Establish Neurology Clinic

The University of California, San Francisco has announced an $18 million gift from Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem to launch a neurology clinic focused on difficult-to-diagnose cases.

The UCSF Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Neurology Clinic at UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay will make it easier for patients with ambiguous neurological symptoms but no diagnosis to receive pre-diagnostic screening and expert consultations during a single visit. To be housed in the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Neuroscience Building, the clinic will include fourteen patient exam and consultation rooms, adjacent facilities with imaging equipment and a neuro-infusion center, and telehealth capabilities that allow a primary care provider and/or other consultant to participate in video conferences with patients.

"We are extremely indebted to the Manetti Shrems for recognizing the importance of the vision for this clinic and making it possible with their generous gift," said UCSF Department of Neurology chair S. Andrew Josephson. "Many patients with neurological symptoms embark on a diagnostic odyssey when they seek answers to their symptoms. Our goal is to expedite an accurate diagnosis, so we can quickly offer the optimal treatment."

"A productive life is not possible without good health," said Jan Shrem, who began his entrepreneurial career as a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman before running a successful publishing business and establishing the Clos Pegase winery. "We believe the new clinic is a step forward for those patients whose lives are compromised by neurological conditions that cannot be defined — much less treated."
