University Hospitals receives $20 million for sports medicine center
University Hospitals (UH) in Cleveland has received a $20 million gift from Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam to establish a center dedicated to sports medicine.
The gift will launch the University Hospitals Haslam Sports Innovation Center, which aims to identify, support, and invest in sports medicine innovations, as well as improve performance, reduce injury risk, and promote healing for professional and recreational athletes. The center will be led by James E. Voos, UH Department of Orthopedic Surgery chair, president-elect of the NFL Physicians Society, and Cleveland Browns head team physician. Voos’s research areas include creating a return to play assessment after ACL reconstruction using wearable technology as well as research in regenerative medicine.
Dee and Jimmy Haslam are CEO and chairman, respectively, of the Haslam Sports Group, which includes ownership of the Cleveland Browns, a controlling interest in the Milwaukee Bucks, and investor-operators of the Columbus Crew.
“The health and well-being of our athletes and our communities is of the utmost importance to us. We are inspired by Dr. Voos and the team he has assembled—his incredible drive and vision to continually innovate, searching for cutting-edge opportunities, while providing world-class care,” the Haslams said. “We know the unique opportunity we have to invest in sports medicine, creating new technologies and innovations to improve performance and contribute to the future of sport, while creating healthier athletes and communities. It is a privilege to partner with Dr. Voos and UH in this exciting next chapter.”
