The University of Nevada, Reno has announced a $5 million gift from the Satre Family Fund at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada in support of its School of Medicine, College of Education, and athletic programs.

The gift includes $3 million to boost translational research efforts at the University of Nevada School of Medicine; $1.6 million in support of the College of Education's community outreach programs; and $400,000 to help the school's athletic department build community pride and spirit.

Satre Family Fund co-founder Jennifer Satre, who earned her master's degree in education from the university in 1980, served three terms (2001-06) on the UNR Foundation board of trustees, served as board chair in 2006, and became a trustee emerita in 2007. Her husband, Phil, who earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1971 and a law degree from UC Davis, served as chairman and CEO of Harrah's Entertainment, Inc., now called Caesars Entertainment Corporation, until his retirement in 2005.

"Our motivation is simple," said Jennifer Satre, "We would like to see the quality of education in Nevada improve, we would like health care to improve, and we would like the state of Nevada to continue to prosper."
