The University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW) has announced a $25 million gift from Yousry Sayed and his wife, Linda (’78, ’85M), in support of healthcare initiatives and teacher recruitment and retention.

The largest philanthropic gift in the university’s history includes $20 million over five years to advance UNCW’s programs in medical education, clinical care, research, and healthcare accessibility. The remainder of the gift is designated for recruiting prospective teachers and providing scholarships for individuals transitioning to a teaching career.

The Sayeds are dedicated donors, committing $5 million in 2017 in support of pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry programs. Yousry Sayed previously served as a professor in UNCW’s department of chemistry and biochemistry and in academic administration, and Linda Sayed was named a 2024 Distinguished Alumna of the Year and previously taught chemistry at UNCW.

“These dear friends believe in the power of higher education to transform lives, improve communities and create positive change in the world,” said UNCW chancellor Aswani K. Volety. “Their gift commitment will position UNCW to expand programs, enhance our facilities and provide even greater opportunities for our students for generations to come.”
