Urban Land Institute receives $17 million for Chair’s Fund

The Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C., has announced three gifts totaling $17 million to launch the ULI Chair’s Fund.

Contributions include $5 million from former ULI Foundation chair Douglas D. Abbey, who also serves as chair of Swift Real Estate Partners; $5 million from former ULI global chair Thomas W. Toomey, chair and CEO of UDR, Inc.; and $7 million from former ULI president and ULI Foundation chair James D. Klingbeil, founder and CEO emeritus of Klingbeil Capital Management, through the Klingbeil Family Foundation. The unrestricted ULI Chair’s Fund will give ULI flexibility to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. ULI recently announced three new global mission priorities: decarbonizing the real estate sector, educating the next generation of diverse real estate leaders, and increasing housing attainability in communities around the world.

“We are incredibly grateful to Doug, Jim, and Tom for their generous gifts of time, talent, and financial resources over many, many years,” said ULI global CEO W. Edward Walter. “Their latest gifts are very significant and will further solidify our foundation and help ensure that we can deliver on ULI’s mission well into the future.”
