UT Health Science Center Receives $25 Million From Long Family

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has announced a $25 million gift from Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long.

A portion of the gift will be used to endow student scholarships in medicine, nursing, and graduate and physician-assistant studies. Of the remaining $12.5 million, $6.25 million will be used to advance medical research that alleviates suffering, with a focus on diabetes and other illnesses prevalent in South Texas, while $6.25 million will be used for salaries, endowed chairs, laboratories, and faculty research needs. In recognition of the gift, the center's main campus will be renamed the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Campus.

"We think the medical school in San Antonio is poised and ready to become a major medical school," Joe Long told the Austin American-Statesman. "We believe [funding education] has the greatest impact for the money you give because you're educating people to lead the country in the future."
