UT's Dell Medical School receives $2 million for homelessness services

The University of Texas at Austin has received $2 million from John Paul DeJoria and his wife, Eloise, in support of homelessness services at Dell Medical School, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

Awarded through JP's Peace, Love & Happiness Family Foundation, the gift will establish an endowed chair focused on improving health services for people who are experiencing homelessness, including best practices for the provision of integrated health care, mental health services, and social resources. While the inaugural holder of the chair has not been named, the medical school has been working on the issue with partners CommUnityCare Health Centers and Integral Care and the local homeless population for several years.

DeJoria, who as a young man was briefly homeless, is the co-founder of hair care company John Paul Mitchell Systems and tequila maker Patrón Spirits. He joined the Giving Pledge in 2011.

"I got out of [making this gift] the biggest high in the world," DeJoria told the American-Statesman. "You will never experience a bigger high in your life than when you do something for someone else and ask for nothing in return."
