V Foundation launches grants for women scientists in cancer research

The V Foundation for Cancer Research in Cary, North Carolina, has announced the first recipients of A Grant of Her Own: The Women Scientists Innovation Award for Cancer Research

The grants are focused on advancing cancer research by investing $8 million in the work of 11 women scientists. According to the foundation, women researchers face substantial pay gaps—on average $18,000 less in salary per year compared to their male colleagues—and receive 38 percent less support for their research than their male colleagues.

Recipients of the Translational Research Award were awarded $800,000 each over four years; they include Sarah Adams at the University of New Mexico Cancer Research & Treatment Center, Julia Carnevale at the UCSF/Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Lesley Jarvis of the Dartmouth Cancer Center, Sita Kugel at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and Eva Hernando-Monge at NYU Langone Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center. The winners of the V Scholar Award, which awards $600,000 over three years per recipient, are Kelly Bolton at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Christina Glytsou at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Sarah Johnstone at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center, Katherine Tossas at VCU Massey Cancer Center, Christina Towers at Salk Cancer CenterSalk Institute for Biological Studies, and Ly Vu at the University of British Columbia
