Voters want to strengthen nonprofit voice in government, poll finds

Registered voters for the upcoming midterm elections are more likely to support legislation that includes nonprofit voices and perspectives, a poll by Independent Sector finds.

According to the organization’s latest poll, registered voters want to see nonprofits better resourced through charitable giving, more represented in policy conversations, and actively engaged in civic engagement in the communities they serve. The poll found that 85 percent of voters support restoring the universal charitable deduction permanently for all taxpayers, including 45 percent of voters who strongly support the giving incentive, and 84 percent of voters think that government could better solve problems facing local communities if nonprofits had an official seat at the table. According to the findings, 92 percent of voters surveyed support local charities educating policy makers about the needs of the communities they serve.

“As a national nonprofit organization representing a diverse set of nonprofits, foundations, and corporate giving programs, Independent Sector recognizes the significance of this public support and looks forward to building and mobilizing the sector’s advocacy muscle,” the organization said in a statement.
