Walker West Music Academy receives $4 million for program expansion
The Walker West Music Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota, has received $4 million from Pat and Gary Sauer through their Sauer Family Foundation, the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder reports.
The gift will enable the non-academic music school—which provides accessible community education rooted in the African American cultural experience to students of all ages and backgrounds—to expand its footprint from its current weekly capacity of 300 students and more than 5,700 program participants annually. While classical music training is offered, Walker West specializes in jazz, gospel, and other improvisational styles. The academy’s programs include a well-regarded youth jazz ensemble that recently won first-place honors at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival and an online and in-person “dementia-friendly” chorus.
“Each kid should have music in their lives or art in their lives,” said Walker West Music Academy executive director Braxton Haulcy. “And we’re here to make sure that happens as much as possible. As [academy co-founder] Grant West would say: ‘There are no bad notes.’”
