Walmart Announces New Round of 'Fighting Hunger Together' Initiative
Walmart has announced a new round of its Fighting Hunger Together initiative, part of a $2 billion commitment by the giant retailer and the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in America.
Over the next few months, the initiative will partner with Feeding America and ten leading grocery suppliers to award $3 million in grants to hunger relief programs across the country and generate more than 35 million meals for local foodbanks. Companies supporting the effort include Campbell's Soup, ConAgra Foods, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, General Mills, Kraft, Kellogg's, Mondelez International, Nestl, PepsiCo, and Unilever.
In addition, during the month of April, key suppliers will host Stuff the Truck food drive events, while Walmart associates will be invited to nominate organizations in their communities to receive a $5,000 grant as part of the company's Volunteerism Goes Viral program.
"An astonishing one in five children in America are food insecure, not knowing, at some point during the year, where their next meal will come from, and as the nation's largest grocer, we have a responsibility to help change this reality," said Walmart Foundation senior director Julie Gehrki. "With this initiative, we are working to help families across the U.S. by generating meals and awarding grants to local foodbanks and agencies to support hunger relief programs, including backpack programs providing vital meals to children when they are out of school, and community gardens teaching families how to grow their own healthy foods."
