Warren Alpert, Brown University Benefactor, Dies
Warren Alpert, who donated $100 million in January to what is now called the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, has died at age 86, the Brown Daily Herald reports.
The son of Lithuanian immigrants, Alpert received the Purple Heart during World War II, earned degrees from Boston University and the Harvard Business School, and in 1950 founded Warren Equities Inc., which sells fuel and groceries under the Xtra Mart brand and is one of the largest privately owned companies in the country. In 1986, he established the Warren Alpert Foundation in Providence, Rhode Island, to support medical research and health care. Through the foundation, Alpert donated $20 million to Harvard and $15 million to Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
"Mr. Alpert's philanthropy will enable the university to enhance medical education at Brown," university president Ruth Simmons said in a statement. "We are grateful for [his] support, which will help educate generations of young physicians at the university."
