Wayne State University Receives $15 Million for Medical Education Commons

Wayne State University in Detroit has received a $15 million gift from Nick Labedz to support the construction of a new medical education commons, the Detroit News reports.

The gift — the largest individual donation in the university's history — was made in memory of Richard Mazurek, a 1961 graduate of Wayne's medical school who died in 2002. The new commons, which will be named in Mazurek's honor, will include a two-story, 34,000-square-foot facility complete with classrooms, a testing center, and a simulation lab.

"[Richard] just thought so highly of Wayne, and he loved education so much I thought what better place to give some of his estate than Wayne," said Labedz, a Detroit native who lives in Brentwood, California.
