Weingart Foundation awards $8.7 million in grants

The Los Angeles-based Weingart Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $8.7 million.

Grants were awarded to 64 organizations working to advance racial justice, provide critical services, and build political power in underserved communities. Half of the recipient organizations in this round of grantmaking are new partners and more than three-quarters are led by Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC). Grants include $200,000 to Forgotten Children, a Black-led, women-led anti-human trafficking organization; $150,000 to Center for Living and Learning, a reentry organization in the San Fernando Valley; and $200,000 to Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health, Inc., a culturally competent healthcare provider serving Native Americans. Additional grants include $75,000 to Mirror Memoirs, a narrative change and healing justice organization focused on BIPOC LGBTQIA+ survivors of child sexual abuse; $125,000 to AWOKE, which develops youth leadership, civic engagement, and collective healing through the arts, athletics, and community organizing; and $50,000 to Boyle Heights Beat, which facilitates youth-led bilingual community journalism that uplifts community voices.

Additionally, grants were awarded to prioritize power-building ecosystems emerging in Orange, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties in the areas of criminal justice (Peace and Justice Law Center and OC Justice Initiative), economic justice (Cooperaciуn Santa Ana), environmental justice (OC Environmental Justice Fund and People’s Collective for Environmental Justice), and housing justice (House Farm Workers!).
