The London-based Moorfields Eye Charity has announced a £10 million ($12.4 million) from the W. Garfield Weston Foundation in support of Oriel, a new integrated center for advancing eye health scheduled to open in 2027.

Oriel, which will house the Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the University College London (UCL) Institute of Ophthalmology, is a joint initiative between Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and Moorfields Eye Charity. The new location in the Camden section of London will encourage collaboration among researchers, clinicians, educators, and innovators working with patients in a cross-disciplinary approach to increase the pace at which new discoveries and treatments are developed.

“We’re so very grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation for their generous gift, which will help transform the future of eye health,” said Moorfields Eye Charity CEO Robert Dufton. “The new eye health center will harness the expertise of the partners with closer working between clinicians and researchers speeding up the delivery of the highest quality treatments and therapies for patients.”
