William Penn Foundation awards $8 million for basic needs, education
The William Penn Foundation has announced grants totaling $8 million to Philadelphia-area nonprofit organizations to provide continued COVID-19 relief in basic needs and children's education.
Ninety grants were awarded through the Family Recovery Fund, a one-year, $10 million grantmaking and matching funds initiative that provides access to healthy food, support for families to stay in their homes, and enhanced K-12 learning opportunities. Later this year, the fund will support additional grantmaking in job training and workforce development.
Recipients in the category of food access include Broad Street Ministry, the Education, Culture, Opportunities Foundation, Einstein Medical Center, Rebel Ventures; and The U School. Support to help families remain in their homes was awarded to the Campaign for Working Families, Congreso de Latinos Unidos, SeniorLAW Center; and the Urban League of Philadelphia. And in the category of K-12 learning opportunities, recipients include Education Works, Smith Memorial Playground, To Our Children's Future with Health, and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. In addition, matching grants were awarded to the Bread & Roses Community Fund/Trans Resilience Fund, Independence Mission Schools, Philabundance, Women Against Abuse, and the Youth Sentencing and Reentry Project.
"After a year of virtual schooling, children must come first this summer. Their needs, educational experiences, and playful learning opportunities are essential to Philadelphia's recovery," said William Penn Foundation board chair Janet Haas. "So too are efforts to help families stay nourished and remain in their homes. For the allocation of these grants, we relied on the expertise of peers and colleagues with experience in these fields, and are grateful for their guidance, which helped us allocate grant funds more quickly."
