WVU Medicine receives $2 million grant for ultrasound research
West Virginia University (WVU) has announced a $2 million gift from the Encova Foundation of West Virginia in support of ultrasound research at West Virginia University Medicine conducted by the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI).
The grant will fund the expansion of focused ultrasound research at RNI by enrolling additional patients in clinical trials, acquiring equipment, and hiring skilled personnel. According to WVU, RNI researchers launched the first safety and feasibility study involving focused ultrasound neuromodulation for addiction, which demonstrated an immediate and lasting reduction in drug cravings. Over the past decade, Encova has donated more than $9 million in support of WVU academics, athletics, facilities, health care, and other programs.
“In order to advance treatments for this worsening public health crisis, new approaches and ideas must be explored,” said RNI executive chair Ali Rezai. “We are deeply appreciative of the Encova Foundation’s partnership and support as we work to develop innovative treatments that could save lives and develop new addiction treatments.”
