Zuckerberg, Chan Give $5 Million to Expand East Palo Alto Health Clinic

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have donated $5 million to a health clinic serving families in several low-income communities, including the East Menlo Park neighborhood where Facebook is headquartered, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

The gift to the Ravenswood Family Health Center in East Palo Alto will enable the clinic to double its capacity and add a pharmacy and new services, including mammography, optometry, and podiatry. The $5 million gift, which was made through a fund the couple established at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, is the largest private gift to date to a $29 million capital campaign that will underwrite construction of a new, 38,000-square-foot building for the clinic.

"Investing in our local community is really important for me and Priscilla, and we're proud to support the Ravenswood Family Health Center," Zuckerberg said in a statement. "Providing high-quality health care for everyone is important for building a strong community."

"As a pediatrician, I have seen great need for high-quality, comprehensive health care and also the positive impact care can make on the entire family," said Chan. "Quality health care and a strong educational system are the key elements of a healthy community.”
