Fund Raising in the One-Person Shop: Achieving Success with Limited Resources, 4th ed.

By Scott Ullman

The suggestions offered by many fundraising manuals are often not appropriate for smaller nonprofit organizations with their limited financial and personnel resources. Now in its fourth edition, Fund Raising and Marketing in the One-Person Shop has filled a unique niche for the past decade in the how-to-fundraising manual market.

The book's premise is that staffing is limited in the small nonprofit, and there is a need for the support of others in developing and implementing successful strategies for marketing and fundraising. The book is full of creative ideas and field-tested solutions for developing a meaningful fundraising and marketing program.

Critical to a small shop is setting priorities and the ability to recruit others. The first chapter of the book focuses on building a volunteer base, using interns and recruiting board members to implement your program. Always with an eye to cost-effectiveness and savings, the authors detail how to identify potential donors, utilize technology, garner publicity, and acknowledge donors within the restraints of a small budget. Other topics include strategic planning, grantwriting, donor research, online fundraising, and marketing.

There is a great deal covered in 189 pages, so the reader shouldn't expect an in-depth discussion on a topic. However, its conciseness and emphasis on successful case examples —— and actual samples of marketing documents —— make the book both effective and readable. Although the book's cover states that it is for both new and experienced managers, the overview nature of the book makes its more suitable for inexperienced fundraisers or marketing personnel.
