Baltimore Community Foundation

Baltimore Community Foundation
Founded: 1972

Mission: To inspire donors to achieve their charitable goals from generation to generation and to improve the quality of life in the Baltimore region through grantmaking, enlightened civic leadership, and strategic investments.

About the Organization: Founded in 1972, the Baltimore Community Foundation comprises over seven hundred different philanthropic funds with a total of $174 million in core assets and $275 million in combined core and allied assets. Governed by a thirty-member board of trustees, the foundation has granted over $412 million since its inception in support of efforts to make the greater Baltimore region a better place, today and for future generations. To that end, the foundation pursues three broad goals: building a civic endowment that functions as a permanent source of philanthropic funding for the greater Baltimore region; helping donors plan and carry out their charitable giving in Baltimore, the region, and across the country; and working in partnership with other foundations, public agencies, and the business sector to bring a consistent voice of leadership to critical civic issues.

Current Programs: On May 1, 2015, the foundation established the Fund for Rebuilding Baltimore to help repair the damage, physical and emotional, that was done following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray a week after Gray's arrest by Baltimore City police. The foundation's core work includes advocacy, grant programs, and initiatives and partnerships, and focuses on three specific areas: race, equity, and inclusion; education; and neighborhoods.

Website: Visitors to the BCF site can explore the foundation's action agenda, services for nonprofits and students, news and events, and publications. Interested donors can review several ways to give to the foundation, and the site also provides services for financial advisors looking to advance their clients’  philanthropic goals.
