Communities In Schools
Mission:
To surround students with a community of support that empowers them to stay in school and achieve in life.
About the Organization:
Communities In Schools works to keep at-risk students in school by surrounding them with a community of support. Through a school-based coordinator, CIS connects students and their families to community resources tailored to meet their needs. CIS works in more than twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia, serving nearly 2.3 million young people and their families each year.
Current Programs:
Each CIS affiliate works to bring the "five basics" into schools, which includes mentors, tutors, and parental involvement programs; afterschool and extended-hours programs; mental health counseling, family strengthening initiatives, drug and alcohol education, physical and dental exams, eye care and immunizations, and help for teen parents; technology training, career counseling, and college preparation; and community service opportunities and junior ROTC programs. Through the national office, CIS provides training, support, and a policy platform designed to enhance public education through the integration of student services in classrooms and communities across the country.
Web Site:
The CIS Web site features a map of its network, success stories, and resources for college-bound students and their parents. In addition, site visitors can learn how to support the organization and purchase a copy of CIS founder Bill Milliken's book, The Last Dropout: Stop the Epidemic.
Funding:
CIS receives funding from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
