DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
Founded: 1999

Mission:
To cut the District of Columbia's teen pregnancy rate in half by 2015.

About the Organization:
Founded in 1999, the DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is the only organization devoted entirely to preventing teen pregnancy in the nation's capital. The organization works to reduce the city's teen pregnancy rate in order to improve the lives and well-being of adolescents and families and improve the social and economic health of the city. With a focus on evidence-based approaches to teen pregnancy prevention, DC Campaign engages, supports, and disseminates information to adolescents, parents, government agencies, schools, community and nonprofit organizations, the media, and others concerned about teen pregnancy.

Current Programs:
DC Campaign is based on a youth development model that emphasizes protective factors such as trustworthy adults in the lives of teens, a sense of belonging, a plan to avoid pregnancy until adulthood, teen-friendly healthcare providers, and safe, supervised environments in which to learn new skills. The organization advocates for policies and programs to benefit the District's teens; develops youth leaders through Youth Leadership Task Forces designed to help teens build character and increase knowledge of prevention strategies; and trains healthcare providers, social workers, foster care and juvenile justice professionals, church volunteers, parents, and others on how to talk with teens about love, sex, values, and relationships. The campaign also works to identify, analyze, and disseminate information on teen pregnancy prevention and evidence-based programs; provides data via various media formats and tools; and provides technical assistance to organizations and individuals.

Web Site:
Visitors to the site can download fact sheets about the number of teen births in Washington, D.C., by city ward, the risk of teen pregnancy among runaway or homeless youth, links between teen pregnancy and children placed in foster care, and tips for counseling teens after a negative pregnancy test; compare "risk behavior maps" that show the geographical distribution of teen births and juvenile arrests; or browse resources and presentations from the campaign's roundtable events. Supporters can register for the campaign's annual Take a Step to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Walk and Rally or make a donation.

Funding Needs:
The DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations.
