MADRE

MADRE
Founded: 1983

Mission: To advance women’s human rights by meeting urgent needs in communities and building lasting solutions to crises defined by women and girls.

About the organization: Founded in 1983, MADRE is an international women’s human rights organization working across geographies and generations to deliver sustainable gender, racial, climate, and disability justice. The organization supports grassroots women through two strategies: meeting their basic needs as a bridge to develop their advocacy and political participation. MADRE sustains grassroots women’s organizations, providing the practical skills, ongoing support and access necessary to build new skills, step up as leaders and win rights for themselves and their communities locally, nationally, and globally. To date, MADRE has provided over $65 million in grants to grassroots organizations in more than 40 countries.

Current programs: MADRE’s focus areas include advancing climate justice, ending gender violence, and building a just peace. Through its Emergency and Disaster Relief Fund and partnerships with local organizations, the Rapid Response, Rapid Action program delivers emergency humanitarian aid to women and families most in need in the wake of climate catastrophes and conflicts. The Sowing Solidarity program works to dismantle the economic and political systems that drive the climate crisis, restoring land and water rights and food sovereignty to communities who will foster sustainable economies. Through its Resist in Body program, MADRE works to advance disability rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, abortion rights, midwifery, and freedom from domestic violence. The People’s Peace campaign is aimed at advancing women as peacemakers to confront war and authoritarianism, while the Generation Justice program supports the intergenerational work for gender justice and advances leaders in campaigns to advance the rights of women and girls and LGBTQIA+ people of all genders.
