Community Foundation Update (06/19/2021)
Arizona
Following the emergency declarations issued by Governor Doug Ducey, the Arizona Community Foundation has announced the activation of its Disaster Relief Fund to respond to the Telegraph and Mescal fires in eastern Arizona. ACF will seed the fund with $10,000 in support of post-fire recovery, repair, and community rebuilding efforts, which may include environmental and infrastructure projects, community cleanup, support for displaced families, animal care, and/or rehabilitation and rebuilding of damaged buildings or homes resulting from the fires.
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced the appointment of Jenny Flynn as president and CEO, effective August 30. Mark Montoya, who currently is serving as interim president and CEO, has been appointed chief operating officer. Since 2001, Flynn has served in various leadership positions at the University of Arizona Foundation and currently is senior vice president for development services and a member of the University of Arizona Alumni and Development Program executive team. She is also a trustee of the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona.
Arkansas
The Walton Family Foundation has announced the creation of a statewide fund that will support organizations working to improve the quality of life for LGBTQ Arkansans. To be overseen by the Arkansas Community Foundation with support from a grant selection committee, the $1 million initiative has received philanthropic support from the Alice L. Walton Foundation and from Olivia and Tom Walton through the Walton Family Foundation. Organizations offering legal, health, education, advocacy, and other critical services to the LGBTQ community are eligible to apply for grants of at least $25,000.
California
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced the election of Kate Willcox to its board of directors. An attorney at the local firm of Boutin Jones, Willcox is a member of the foundation's Philanthropic Advisors' Forum of Greater Sacramento, which encourages professional advisors to discuss philanthropy with their clients. She is also a two-time recipient of the foundation's Bridge Builders Award, which recognizes advisors whose clients have opened charitable funds at the foundation.
Connecticut
The Connecticut Community Foundation has announced that its Women's Giving Circle, which includes sixty women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in greater Waterbury and Litchfield Hills, has awarded grants totaling $27,000 to seven organizations. Priority was given to programs that promote outcomes related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Established in 2017, the Women's Giving Circle has awarded a total of $121,500 to date. Recipients of the latest funding include Girls With Impact, Madre Latina, Naugatuck Valley Community College, and Girl Scouts of Connecticut.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced thirty-three grants totaling $300,000 from its recently established Faith Community Grant program, which provides support to faith-based organizations assisting residents disproportionately affected by COVID-19; addressing needs of congregants and the broader community impacted by racial/ethnic, geographic, economic disparities; or advancing community engagement focused on social and racial justice. Recipients include the Center for Leadership and Justice, Christ Church Cathedral, FaithActs for Education, and the Horace Bushnell Children's Food Pantry.
Maine
Women for Healthy Rural Living has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Maine Community Foundation for its Incredible Edible Milbridge project, the Machias News reports. The grant will enable the organization to expand its food production.
Massachusetts
The SouthCoast Community Foundation in New Bedford has announced the creation of the Leadership Equity Fund to address racial disparities and work toward a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society. Grants from the fund will support two focus areas: nonprofit organizations working to end racism and run by leaders who identify as Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); and the professional development and advancement of employees of nonprofits who identify as BIPOC. To date, the foundation has raised $150,000 for the fund and it is working to raise a total of $250,000 during the summer. In addition, it has awarded grants of $30,000 each to the New Bedford Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts.
New Mexico
As part of its first discretionary competitive grant cycle, the Los Alamos Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $27,000 in support of seven local nonprofit organizations. Recipients include Self Help, Los Alamos Visiting Nurses, First Born of Los Alamos, and PEEC.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $2.9 million in support of seven nonprofits through the Arnall Community Funds, which were established earlier this year through an $85 million gift from the Arnall Family Foundation. Recipients include Heartline, Marland's Place, Restore OKC, and the Oklahoma Humane Society.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced it is partnering with the Enterprise Community Loan Fund to offer an impact investing option to address the shortage of affordable housing in the capital region. To date, the foundation has committed $5 million to the fund, and it plans to reinvest in the ECLF Impact Note, which has created and preserved more than five hundred units of affordable housing.
