Community Foundation Update (05/22/2021)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, in partnership with the David and Lura Lovell Foundation and Vitalyst Health Foundation, has announced grants totaling $105,000 to advance the inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) work of nonprofits in the region. Grant recipients include the Arizona Theatre Company, Boys to Men Arizona, Southern Arizona Senior Pride, and the Tucson Jewish Community Center.
California
The San Diego Foundation has announced a first round of grants totaling $3.2 million in support of forty local nonprofit organizations working to provide thousands of students in the San Diego Unified school district with free access to afternoon summer enrichment activities through the Level Up SD program. All day on May 26, San Diego Unified families will be able to register students for free summer camps and programs with local organizations, including Girls Scouts San Diego, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Junior Achievement of San Diego, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, Elementary Institute of Science, and La Jolla Playhouse.
The county of Santa Barbara, in partnership with the Santa Barbara Foundation, has announced that its Emergency Business Assistance Grant Program is accepting applications through June 30, or until all funds are granted, whichever comes first. The program will provide up to $10,000 in funding for microenterprise businesses or up to $25,000 for small businesses impacted by the COVID pandemic.
Maine
The Sail, Power, and Steam Museum in Rockland has received a grant of $4,680 from the Maine Community Foundation in support of its SKFF (Sail Kids For Free) program, the Penobscot Bay Pilot reports. Funding for the grant was provided by the foundation's Knox County Fund and the Metcalfe Family Fund for Knox County at the recommendation of the Knox County Committee advisors.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced the addition to its staff of Adrienne Wallace as director of grantmaking and programs and Geoff O'Connell as chief financial officer.
Michigan
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced that seven journalism projects will receive grants totaling more than $200,000 from the Detroit Journalism Engagement Fund. Launched in 2017 as a partnership between the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and CFSEM, the fund works to advance quality journalism in the region that reflects the perspectives of diverse constituencies, including people of color, women, and low-income communities. Recipients of the most recent grants include Bridging Communities, Detour Media, the MuchRock Foundation for Outlier Media, and Tostada Magazine.
Minnesota
The Minneapolis Foundation has announced a final round of micro-grants from its Fund for Safe Communities, bringing the total awarded to local groups working to address community trauma and create safe spaces for healing in the weeks leading up to the anniversary of the police killing of George Floyd to more than $204,000. The grants will fund a variety of community events organized by forty-seven nonprofits, schools, and religious institutions — including healing circles, community conversations around social justice, stress-relieving physical activities, and a variety of creative activities.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced that it is partnering with the Foundation for New Hampshire Community Colleges to give New Hampshire students a head start on their college careers. The commitment includes more than $1 million from the two organizations, as well as consulting and other services, to help students across the state get on the path to a postsecondary degree or certificate. Through the initiative, any student graduating from a New Hampshire high school in 2021 is eligible to take a course of their choice at any of the seven member colleges of the Community College System of New Hampshire, with the commitment from the two organizations covering tuition and associated fees. The colleges will work with students to help with course selection and other types of advising.
New Jersey
The Community Foundation of South Jersey in Haddonfield has awarded a fifth round of grants from its COVID-19 Response Fund totaling $155,000 to South Jersey nonprofits working to address the needs of communities in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties. Over the past year, CFSJ has distributed more than $848,000 to more than a hundred organizations impacted by the pandemic and related economic downturn. Recent grantees include the Arc of Atlantic County, Cherry Hill Free Clinic, One Village Alliance, and VietLead.
North Carolina
The Foundation For The Carolinas has received grants totaling $3.6 million from Novant Health, Truist, Atrium Health, and Red Ventures toward its goal of raising $18 million in support of local arts organizations. The campaign, which has raised $10.8 million to date, looks to match $18 million in funding from the City of Charlotte over the next three years.
Ohio
The Cleveland Foundation has announced that its Greater Cleveland COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund has awarded a fourteenth cycle of biweekly grants totaling $78,500 to local nonprofits and groups serving Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga counties. The latest round of recipients includes Neighborhood Connections and Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $225,000 to help disadvantaged residents in central Oklahoma receive essential healthcare services, the demand for which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. The grants are part of the foundation's Access to Health Care iFund program, an initiative that provides annual funding to central Oklahoma nonprofits providing essential healthcare services. Grant recipients include Mercy Health Foundation Oklahoma City, Planned Parenthood Great Plains, Pivot Inc., and Positive Tomorrows. Since 2007, the initiative has awarded $1.9 million to nonprofits serving the community.
