350.org
Mission:
To build a global climate change network that coordinates online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions around the world.
Background:
350.org was founded in 2008 by a group of university friends and author/activist Bill McKibben to advance the belief that "a global grassroots movement can hold our leaders accountable to the realities of science and the principles of justice." Through a series of coordinated global events — including the International Day of Climate Action in 2009, the Global Work Party in 2010, Moving Planet in 2011, and Climate Impacts Day in 2012 — 350.org works to mobilize activists and organizations around the world to dismantle the influence and infrastructure of the fossil fuel industry and to develop "people-centric" solutions to the climate crisis.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can learn how to start a local 350 group, host a meet-up, hold a workshop, organize an action, or start a petition or campaign; increase the impact of their campaigns with art, photos, and video; read tips on how to spread the word about their efforts; and learn more about 350.org campaigns like the Fossil Free: Divest from Fossil Fuels, Stop the Keystone XL Pipeline, and the Global Power Shift initiative. In addition, visitors can launch an interactive 350 World Map to see where local groups and global power shift movements exist worldwide, view posts on the organization's Facebook page or photos on its Flickr page, read about the science behind climate change, and/or make a donation. Organizations looking to connect with others can view the site's Friends and Allies page to see who's partnering with 350.org and contact the 350.org team for more information.
