All About Birds
Mission:
To provide comprehensive information on North American birds, bird watching, and bird conservation.
Background:
All About Birds is a project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that seeks to advance the lab's mission of interpreting and conserving the earth's biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. The site is a 2010 Webby Award winner and provides information to the lab's thirty thousand members as well as millions of Web visitors annually.
Outstanding Web Features:
All About Birds features a database that can be browsed by common name, shape, or taxonomy and contains information on North American birds' appearance, habitat, migratory behavior, and other characteristics, as well as audio and video from the Cornell's Macaulay Library. The guide also provides tips for identifying, attracting, and photographing different bird species and provides links to the lab's FeedWatcher and NestWatch projects, which enable individuals to submit data on birds they see in their backyard to the lab's researchers. The site also provides access to the lab's blog, Twitter feed and Living Bird magazine.
