Annie E. Casey Foundation
Mission:
To foster public policies, human service reforms, and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of today's vulnerable children and families.
Background:
Established in Seattle in 1948 by United Parcel Service (UPS) founder Jim Casey and his siblings George, Harry, and Marguerite, the Annie E. Casey Foundation was named in honor of their mother. After relinquishing his administrative responsibilities at UPS, Jim Casey reshaped the foundation's focus, launching Casey Family Programs, an independent operating foundation and later Casey Family Services, which today operates as a fully licensed, nonprofit child welfare agency. Upon his death in 1983, Casey bequeathed a substantial amount to the foundation, and with those additional resources the organization expanded Casey Family Services' locations and scope of work. In turn, more than half the foundation's endowment was reserved for grantmaking across the country to assist disadvantaged children. The foundation relocated its headquarters to Baltimore in 1994.
Outstanding Web Features:
The site provides information on the Casey Foundation's major program initiatives throughout the country. The Knowledge Center provides advocates, policy makers, practitioners, the media, researchers, and community members with a host of resources focused on child welfare/permanence, community change, economic security, education, health, and juvenile justice. To search for reports or other resources, users enter keywords and can specify work areas, subtopics, and even initiatives. The knowledge center also provides featured resources and a data spotlight that links to the foundation's databases associated with its major initiatives, such as KIDS COUNT.
