Avaaz

Avaaz

Mission:
To bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere.

Background:
Launched in 2007, Avaaz — which means "voice" in several European, Middle Eastern, and Asian languages — is a platform that invites people across the globe to take action on major issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The site was developed by Res Publica, a global civic advocacy group, and MoveOn.org, a pioneering Internet advocacy group in the United States.

Outstanding Web Features:
Available in fourteen languages, Avaaz community campaigns are served by a core team and thousands of volunteers. Registered users can take action by signing online petitions. Each campaign page includes more information about the issue, the total number of users who have signed the petition, a list of recent signers, and sharing tools that enable users to promote a campaign via various social networking sites. Visitors to the site also learn more about other campaigns and read Avaaz success stories. To support community campaigns off-line, users are encouraged to fund media campaigns; send e-mails, call, and/or lobby legislators; and organize protests and other off-line events.
