California Community Foundation

Mission:
To build one community out of many by matching acts of caring to community needs.

Purpose of Site:
The California Community Foundation Web site provides information about the foundation, its history, financials, and board and staff. It offers tools for giving, including an introduction to philanthropy and instructions on how to set up a fund at the foundation, in addition to news about grantmaking activities and resources for grantseekers. Finally, the Web site features extensive information about the nonprofit community in Los Angeles and the surrounding area.

Background:
Joseph Sartori of Security Pacific Bank helped start CCF in 1915 in a broom closet at the bank. The organization has evolved over the last eighty-eight years to help Southern California philanthropists make lasting contributions to their community, and it now boasts a combined asset value of more than $530 million.

Home Page:
The home page gives Web users plenty of options, including the toolbar across the top with links to Tools for Giving, Advisor Center, Inside CCF, Nonprofit LA, DonorConnect, and Grantmaking. The page also includes news and updates from CCF, a poll of the week, a brief history of the foundation, and a keyword search box.

Outstanding Feature:
The CCF Web site helps donors and their advisors make effective, educated decisions about their philanthropy. The site's Advisor Center welcomes professionals from the legal, accounting, and planned giving communities, but its information is also a good resource for potential philanthropists. The online center features information on planned giving, the differences between giving through a community foundation and creating a private foundation, services for private foundations, and restitution funds, as well as meetings and seminars for in-person assistance and a library of forms to get the paperwork process started. CCF's site also makes giving more convenient with DonorConnect, a secure site for donors that offers online services for individual funds, including fund balance information and the ability to recommend a grant.

Honorable Mention:
The site provides a personal touch through features such as Meet Our Donors, Meet Our Team, and Meet Our Grantees. It also profiles eighty-five heroes within the Los Angeles nonprofit community. In addition, the Nonprofit LA area of the site includes a community calendar of nonprofit events, an online walking tour of nonprofits in downtown Los Angeles, and an online driving excursion to visit nonprofits in the San Fernando Valley.
