City of Memory

City of Memory

Mission:
To share personal stories and memories from the five boroughs of New York City.

Background:
A project of cultural history group City Lore and design firm Local Projects, City of Memory utilizes an interactive map to share stories that relate to the history and personality of New York City. The project is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Outstanding Web Features:
The primary feature of the City of Memory Web site is a map that includes links to stories and videos curated by City Lore and submitted by visitors to the site. Subjects include the Moondance Diner and Village Vanguard in Manhattan, silent movie piano player Abe Lass in Queens, and the Coney Island Polar Bear Club in Brooklyn. Some of the stories are connected to each other, allowing visitors to take virtual tours of the city, such as "Mexico in the Boroughs" or "A Tour of Chinatown." Visitors to the site can zoom in on the map to select stories from a specific location, search for stories by keyword, add a story to the map, or subscribe to the site's RSS feed.
