CompassPoint Nonprofit Services
Mission:
To increase the effectiveness and impact of people working and volunteering in the nonprofit sector.
Purpose of Site:
While the majority of CompassPoint's offerings is focused on Bay Area nonprofits, Web users can log on from anywhere to benefit from the organization's online training materials and research reports. The Web site provides detailed information on all of CompassPoint's products and services, and it also features a collection of links to other sites devoted to strengthening nonprofits.
Background:
CompassPoint is a nonprofit training, consulting, and research organization with offices in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. It offers workshops on topics ranging from computer training to financial management for Bay Area nonprofits and their staff members. CompassPoint also hosts six major conferences each year that promote skills enhancement and community building for the nonprofit sector. Other services include management and technology consulting and support for executive transitions.
Home Page:
The home page of the CompassPoint Web site is neatly organized with "new and noteworthy" items on the left side of the page and Web navigation tools on the right. In addition to conference updates and descriptions of new books and reports, the left side of the page includes information on workshops, e-mail newsletters, and online training courses. At the top of the right side, the site has links to the About CompassPoint, Annual Report, Employment, and Contact Us pages, as well as a pull-down menu with more options. The home page also includes links to CompassPoint offerings such as conferences, management consulting, and research, and to a variety of other resources, including an online bookstore, the Board Café Web site, and other helpful sites for nonprofits.
Outstanding Feature:
The Nonprofit Bookstore on the CompassPoint site is an Amazon.com-style online bookstore for nonprofit staff. The consultants and trainers at CompassPoint regularly update the bookstore site to provide timely recommendations and descriptions of the best books available on nonprofit management. Users can browse titles by type (books, information and referral guides, and research reports) or by category (boards and executive directors, finance, fundraising, management and planning, and personal and professional growth). Shoppers can place orders online if they are using a credit card for payment.
Honorable Mention:
In partnership with BoardSource, CompassPoint operates the Board Café Web site, which offers a bundle of ideas, news, and resources to help nonprofit board members become more effective. Jan Masaoka, CompassPoint's executive director, writes the Board Café monthly newsletter, which is available on the Web site or as an e-mail. Board members who are new to Board Café can visit the site to access previous issues of the electronic publication stretching back to January 2001.
