Health Compass
Mission:
To help older adults better understand health information and research on aging.
Background:
Health Compass is a joint project of two nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the health and independence of older adults: the American Federation for Aging Research and the Merck Institute of Aging & Health. This "how to" Web site helps consumers find health information on the Internet; learn to access the reliability of health information, product claims, and current research findings; and make informed decisions about their own health.
Outstanding Web Features:
Designed for easy use by older adults, and to provide them with the facts they need before a visit to the doctor, the Health Compass Web site presents a wealth of information simply and clearly, and in standard and larger type. The site is divided into three learning areas: how to find information on the Internet, how to evaluate the information you find, and how to make informed decisions about your health. It also provides a glossary of terms, each one designated with a symbol and link for easy reference when it occurs in the text; a list of resources from reputable sources, including the Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and a revealing, if slightly lengthy, Living to 100 quiz that, when completed, results in a detailed, personalized document that may be printed out, studied, discussed with one's doctor, and filed for future reference.
