Easy Voter Guide Project

Easy Voter Guide Project

Mission:

To ensure that all Californians have access to nonpartisan information on upcoming elections and other forms of civic involvement.

Background:
The nonpartisan Easy Voter Guide Project is a collaboration of the League of Women Voters of California, the California State Library, and the California Secretary of State's Office, with additional support from the James Irvine Foundation and the AT&T Foundation. The project will produce the free Easy Voter Guide for each of three statewide elections in 2008: the presidential primary on February 5; the state primary for other elected offices (including Congress and the California legislature) on June 3; and the general election on November 4. Available online in seven languages (and in print in five languages), the guides are geared toward new voters and provide easy-to-understand information on the candidates, political parties, voting and registering, and state propositions on the ballot.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Easy Voter Guide (16 pages, PDF) for the February 5 primary is available online in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, and Japanese. The Web site provides additional information on voting, the issues, and the candidates' positions on the issues, as well as a database of national, state (California), and local government representatives. The site also features resources for educating voters, including workbooks, motivational tools, and an FAQ; information for voters with disabilities; materials for teachers; and links to related Web sites, including the LWVC-sponsored Smart Voter, which provides in-depth information in English about state and local elections, polling place locations, and downloadable ballots — for California as well as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Westchester County, New York.
