Geekcorps

Geekcorps

Mission:
To expand the Internet revolution internationally by pairing skilled volunteers from the high-tech world with small and midsize businesses in emerging nations.

Background:
Geekcorps and its partner businesses in developing nations evaluate technical needs and identify volunteers with the expertise to meet those needs. The volunteers receive training on working with people from different backgrounds and then spend up to four months working on-site in developing nations, supported by Geekcorps staff. The organization, which also assists partner businesses in finding venture capital, has worked on projects in Romania, Rwanda, Mongolia, Thailand, Lebanon, Bulgaria, Armenia, and Ghana.

Outstanding Feature:
The volunteers — known as "geeks" — are the backbone of the organization and receive recognition on the Geekcorps Web site. The People section of the site provides profiles of past and present geeks, who hail from eleven countries, as well as honored geeks, the group's board members, and staff. For potential geeks, the site's Get Involved section offers information on applying and a volunteer FAQ. It also includes a forum where visitors can post questions and communicate with members of the Geekcorps community.
