Givology
Mission: To make quality education accessible for all children through a network of grassroots partnerships that connect donors with innovative, high-impact projects and scholarships designed to transform local communities one at a time.
Background: After realizing that, on a global scale, nearly one out of every five children of primary-school age are not in school — and that even more do not have the opportunity to pursue higher education — Joyce Meng and Jennifer Chen, then students at the University of Pennsylvania, started crowdsourcing site Givology in 2008. A completely volunteer-run operation, Givology connects donors and beneficiaries to a network of high-impact, grassroots organizations with a demonstrated track record in their respective communities, an innovative approach to creating impact, and a commitment to evaluation and transparency. Since its launch, the organization, which operates 11 chapters around the globe, has raised over $300,000 to help more than 2,800 students in 26 countries and has received the Intelius Award for "Best Student-Run Social Enterprise" and been named the "Top Education Nonprofit" by GreatNonprofits.
Outstanding Web Features: Visitors to the Givology site are invited to add money to a digital "wallet" (a convenient way to give to multiple projects and students through a single credit card transaction), after which they are able to allocate funds to projects that resonate with them, receive regular updates about those projects, monitor the impact of their donations through an online dashboard, join a giving team, read about Givology's many global partners and their activities, and/or learn more about global education policy. Through the site, donors can also send letters to students they are helping, blog about their experiences, and read about the impact created by the Givology community in the "Notes from the field" section. For those interested in a more hands-on approach, the site outlines how to get involved as a volunteer (and use the online dashboard to track your volunteer hours over time), start a Givilogy chapter in your community, travel abroad as a Givilogy fellow, or intern with Givology's core team. For more information on what Givology is doing worldwide and/or to receive updates about its campaigns, activities, and events, check out the site's press & media section or follow Givology on social media.
